MAKING GLASS FROM THE LAND OF GOLD

Simon Ballen's creativity led to an integrating project called “Suelo Orfebre” A project that involved the “Marmato” community’s future generations using a material considered as waste in the gold mines of the region.

This material known as “Jagua '' is usually dumped into the rivers contaminating them and Simon used this residual material and incorporated it into his glassblowing technique creating a one-of-a-kind pieces using locally sourced material from Marmato in Colombia.

The abstract patterns and flecks in all shades of greens can evoke the nature that surrounds the region and reminds us of the importance of being conscious of our environment and finding new ways to work with what the land provides.
